YESTERDAY

YESTERDAY

A solitary brick chimney in the distant background, the lone witness to an original squatters hut (or its cookhouse), is pictured adjacent to an upgraded road leading to a new bore, tokens that confirm the often repeated narrative of the struggle to establish a permanent presence in an often unforgiving land.

Originally entitled ‘From Generation to Generation’ this was the painting that caught RM William’s eye and to which he addressed his attention when he opened Phil’s exhibition at the Downs Club in Toowoomba in 1992.

If you listen intently, you will hear the harsh, echoing calls of corellas, the only living presence in a now lonely and silent landscape.
