Blessed with natural skills in the handling of horses and cattle, and completely at home in the hot, dry conditions that characterise northern Australia, the Aboriginal stockman or ‘ringer’ quickly became the backbone of the developing northern cattle industry. Today no longer limited to the arid stock routes and vast unfenced cattle stations of the past, a new generation of indigenous stockmen and women can be found right across the top end.
