In relation to the opening of the Hall of Fame, Phil received the below letter from R.M. Williams:
Dear Phil,
Thank you kindly for the opportunity to look over your work, I find it very interesting in fact I would go so far as to say that I think it is probably the best of its kind that has yet come forward.
I consider that the work is the best we have seen. I am sure I can speak for the Hall of Fame in saying that we would be glad to present your canvases to the many thousands of people who will go through that gallery. We could probably come to some arrangement with you regarding this and would be glad to confer with you, my telephone number and address are as above.
I appreciate the fact that you are endeavouring to present the aboriginal stockman and it is quite possible that we might be able to commission a major work. As you know we will be hanging pictures by Sydney Nolan, who has offered to work with us and for us. Also we will be presenting Sawrey’s work, and we consider that the exclusion of inferior work would make the Hall of Fame a place where only works of major importance are presented.
If we could come to some arrangement I am sure we could do business with you and also I would be delighted to promote your work. I thank you kindly again for this opportunity to look at your work.
Best Wishes,
R.M. Williams
